Retirees seek sun, intellectual stimulation 2010-02-24 Warm cities and college towns are the most-researched retirement destinations, TopRetirements.com revealed this week. According to MarketWatch, 68 of the top 100 retirement cities were in the Sun Belt - long a popular place to retire because of its warm weather and abundant sunshine. To people who spent their working lives in cold northern cities, Sun Belt states can seem paradisiacal. Also this week, British news outlet BBC reported that the original warm-weather retirement community, Sun City in Arizona, was still going strong 50 years after its founding. The community is "the perfect beginning to the end of your life," resident Lori Petersen was quoted as saying. The top three retirement destinations, TopRetirements.com said, were Asheville, North Carolina, Sarasota, Florida and Prescott, Arizona. All of the top 10, in fact, were in warm states - a sign that retirees still prefer to follow the sun in their golden years. Not every retiree can afford to move, of course, and many people who had been considering relocation have had to change their plans as a result of diminished savings portfolios. It's a good idea to budget before thinking about resettling, and a budget reality check may be what's needed. ![]() |
